Supporting Cancer Care in Saudi Arabia: Gulf Medical and Paxman Scalp Cooling Announce Strategic Partnership

The Evolving Landscape of Healthcare in Saudi Arabia

Over the past two decades, Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system has undergone profound change. Once heavily reliant on outbound medical tourism, the Kingdom has steadily invested in building local capacity.

Oncology has become one of the most pressing areas of focus. Rising cancer incidence, driven by population growth, aging demographics, and lifestyle shifts, has sharpened the need for comprehensive cancer services delivered within Saudi borders. Breast cancer remains the most common diagnosis among women, while prostate and colorectal cancers are leading among men.

These trends have placed increasing pressure on the health system to deliver comprehensive cancer care locally, covering everything from prevention and early detection to advanced treatment and survivorship support.

Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Program

Central to this progress is Vision 2030, the national transformation agenda that has reshaped nearly every sector of Saudi society, including healthcare. The Health Sector Transformation Program has prioritised equitable access, world-class infrastructure, and improved patient outcomes.

The creation of sustainable, patient-centred financing models and The Centre for National Health Insurance - to manage healthcare costs, ensuring that citizens continue to access services free of charge - are both key pillars to the transformation programme.

Rather than directly providing care, the Centre purchases health services from accredited providers, aligning with international best practice where financing is tied to outcomes and patient satisfaction.

This model is designed to create a more efficient and sustainable system by incentivising quality and guiding the development of services through health clusters. These clusters function as integrated networks that connect primary, secondary, and specialised care, helping to eliminate duplication while raising the overall standard of treatment.

Digital health has been embedded as a core element of this approach. Through e-health platforms, information systems, and virtual care delivery, patients across the Kingdom can increasingly access timely consultations and follow-up services, even in remote areas. Together, these reforms are reshaping the way healthcare is funded and delivered, ensuring that the system is both modern and resilient while maintaining the principle of free care for all citizens.

Addressing Supportive Care in Oncology

Despite significant strides, supportive care has historically lagged behind in oncology provision. For many patients, the experience of chemotherapy is not only physically demanding but also emotionally challenging. One of the most visible and distressing side effects is hair loss and can profoundly affect self-image, confidence, and social participation.

In Saudi Arabia, cultural and ethical dimensions are of great value. Maintaining dignity and personal identity during treatment is deeply important, particularly in a society where personal presentation carries strong social and emotional value. Addressing these dimensions of care is therefore critical in building a truly holistic cancer care pathway.

Gulf Medical’s Mission and Commitment

Gulf Medical Co. Ltd has long played a pivotal role in bringing advanced medical technologies to the Kingdom, aligning its work with national priorities and the evolving needs of Saudi patients. Its mission has consistently been to enable local healthcare providers with innovative solutions that meet international standards, while ensuring they are adapted to the cultural and systemic context of the region.

A New Partnership with Paxman Scalp Cooling

It is in this context that Gulf Medical announced a strategic partnership with Paxman. The collaboration will see the introduction of Paxman Scalp Cooling systems across hospitals and growing oncology centres in Saudi Arabia.

Already trusted by clinicians worldwide, scalp cooling has been shown to reduce the likelihood of chemotherapy-induced hair loss for patients receiving treatment for solid tumour cancers. By preserving hair, the technology addresses an often-overlooked element of cancer care, supporting patients emotionally as well as physically.

For healthcare providers, the integration of scalp cooling represents an opportunity to expand patient-centred services. It offers oncology departments a tool that goes beyond traditional clinical outcomes to support psychosocial well-being.

Upon announcing our new partnership, Gulf Medical said:

“For healthcare providers, this partnership offers a new dimension of patient-centred care. By integrating scalp cooling into oncology departments, hospitals can now offer a solution that not only addresses physical health but also supports emotional well-being. It’s a step toward more holistic treatment—where preserving a patient’s sense of identity and dignity
is just as important as clinical outcomes.”

Toward a Holistic Model of Care

As Saudi Arabia continues to implement its health transformation agenda, the partnership between Gulf Medical exemplifies how international innovation can be adapted to local needs. Cancer care must be about more than survival rates and address the broader human experience of treatment.

Initiatives such as this highlight how targeted collaborations with patient-centric compassion can fill critical gaps in care and contribute to a vision of a future-ready healthcare system.

At Paxman, we’re excited to embark on this partnership with Gulf Medical as the Kingdom progresses its commitment to compassion, support and hope for its patients undergoing cancer treatment.
