ESMO Congress 2024 & EONS17 Round-up

26 September 2024

Last week, the ESMO Congress 2024 & EONS17 wrapped up for another year. Hosted in Barcelona, Spain, this European Oncology congress invited professionals in all areas of oncology and cancer care to exchange knowledge, debate and discuss with the overall goal of improving treatment options for patients. Our team were delighted to be in attendance and manning the Paxman exhibition stand, where we discussed and presented the Paxman Scalp Cooling System and how it helps to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

During the prestigious 5-day event, 34,000 participants from 149 countries made this year's ESMO Congress a truly global gathering, enjoying a whole range of interesting and insightful abstracts, presentations and symposia.  Including a Paxman supported symposium. The team welcomed international delegates and connected with distribution partners from the Middle East to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Georgia.  It was wonderful to meet so many teams from influential cancer centres across Europe who have successfully implemented Paxman Scalp Cooling and those who are beginning their journey to introduce their own scalp cooling programmes.

Achieving successful scalp cooling

On Sunday 15th September, as part of EONS17, Paxman were joined by Prof. Annie Young, Dr. Corina van den Hurk, Aisling Burke, Laura Marqués Jiménez and patient advocate Begoña Parrado to deliver a session on ‘Achieving successful scalp cooling – the importance of nursing in chemotherapy side effect management’.

The engaged audience of oncology professionals filled the auditorium to full capacity and showed a high level of interest during some incredible discussions on enhancing patient care through scalp cooling.

The EONS 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner

On the evening of 13th September, The European Oncology Nursing Society hosted a celebratory dinner to mark its 40th anniversary. Paxman’s Head of International, Anna Parker, had the privilege of attending the event on the team’s behalf along with Paxman’s regional Manager for Spain.

Cap Fitting

In the exhibition halls, visitors to the Paxman stand were able to try a cooling cap on for size themselves to better understand what an accurate fit feels like in order to achieve the best possible patient outcomes with scalp cooling. Delegates participating in the cap fitting were shown how to tell if a cap fit is too tight, too loose or just right.

Poster Presentation

The nursing team from l’Ospedale Oncologico Pascale di Napoli, Italy were delighted to present their recent Poster “Scalp Cooling: What Are Women’s Experiences? A Qualitative-Quantitative Study”  This prospective observational study explored the reasons patients chose to opt for scalp cooling treatment alongside their chemotherapy and assessed their level of hair retention.  It concluded that nurse impact of the treatment was significant and that well-trained, dedicated nurses are key to optimum patient experience.  Furthermore, all women in the study recommended the treatment.
