The AMA issues CPT® Category III codes for mechanical scalp cooling

In early 2021, Paxman received the encouraging official news that the AMA issued CPT® Category III codes for mechanical scalp cooling. This important decision is expected to facilitate a further expansion of patient access to Paxman Scalp Cooling.

Two separate CPT® Category III Codes for “mechanical scalp cooling”, 0662T and 0663T, were issued by the AMA with an effective date of July 1, 2021. The issuance of these codes is a key component to the company’s reimbursement and business strategies.

Richard Paxman, CEO, stated: “As we strive to expand patient access to the Paxman Scalp Cooler, the new CPT codes for mechanical scalp cooling have been a priority for our organization. These CPT codes, combined with the extensive work the company is doing in the area of reimbursement, will expand patient access and enable oncology facilities to appropriately provide this solution to their patients, who would otherwise potentially suffer from the devastating side effect of chemotherapy-induced hair loss. This is a business catalyst for the company and an important access strategy for the patients we serve.”

The new CPT® Category III codes for the Paxman Scalp cooling procedure are:

  1. Scalp cooling, mechanical; initial measurement and calibration of cap (report 0662T once per chemotherapy treatment period).
  2. Placement of device, monitoring, and removal of device (list separately in addition to code for primary procedure). 0663T is to be used in conjunction with 96409, 96411, 96413, 96415, 96416, 96417 and reported once per chemotherapy session.
