Following on from a successful presentation to Innovate UK, the UK’s national business innovation agency, the Paxman Research and Development Team are a step closer to receiving funding for an exciting new project.
The R&D team gave a convincing presentation to two members of the Innovate UK team - Dr Arif Shivji, Paxmans' Monitoring Officer, and Dr Chris Rowe, IUKs’ Medical Technology Innovation Lead.
All presentations given to Innovate UK are judged against five categories including budget control, timeliness and outcome success. In recognition of their consistent efforts to improve the lives of patients going through chemotherapy treatment, the R&D Team scored the maximum number of points available in four out of the five categories.
Securing further interest and funding from an agency that champions national business is a milestone for any company. We asked Patrick Burke - the Head of Design and Development for Paxman, how it feels to have the backing of a government organisation that supports growing businesses, and he replied;
“It feels like a huge vote of confidence from Innovate UK on the innovative and industry-leading work that Paxman are currently focusing on and validation of the previously IUK funded support including four knowledge transfer partnerships and three smart awards.”
Before coming to review this presentation, Dr Shivji and Dr Rowe were aware of Paxman’s most recent successful funding application for a biomedical catalyst project worth £675,000. It is hoped that further funding from Innovate UK will bring Paxman closer to their main aim - making sure that every patient has a successful scalp cooling experience. Patrick Burke reiterated our patient-led ethos as he said that further money for research would, “make an emotionally difficult process as successful as possible for each individual patient.”
Carrying out any medical research would not be possible without the hard work and effort of a dedicated team. We asked Jonathan Binder, manager of the R&D team how it felt to have been part of the group that generated an opportunity for further business growth, and he commented:
“‘I feel honoured to work with such a bright, creative, innovative, and kind team who want nothing more than to change the experience of patients going through chemotherapy. expressed through the passion, efforts, and tenacity they deliver through their work!... They’ve put in a lot of time, thought and extra hours to ensure our patients have the best chance at a pleasant and stress-free experience through the devices they develop”.
